Alaska. The Last Frontier. Where 99.95% of the state is still rugged, untamed wilderness. The best way to see it? Definitely by cruise. But we don’t mean a floating mega-mall with waterslides and Broadway shows. We’re talking boutique ships that are nimble enough to explore tiny fjords while offering the finessed service of larger vessels, minus the typical throngs. That’s why we’ve chartered the National Geographic Sea Bird, an expedition ship that blends a relaxing cruise experience with an award-winning nature documentary. Whether you’re chasing glaciers, spotting bears and whales, or sipping cocktails under the midnight sun, here’s why LGBTQ+ travellers are in for a *cough* hull of a good time on this bad-ass adventure.
1. You’ll Be In Your Own World
Soon after we embark, we’ll bid the crowds, mega cruises, and typical ports adieu (much like those bratty miscreants in The Sound of Music when it’s time for bed).

The National Geographic Sea Bird’s small size is its superpower because we’ll navigate cozy coves, hidden fjords, and narrow passages that bigger ships could never. In fact, once we’re off the deeper waterways, we may not see another ship until we’re approaching port. And that’s what Alaska is really about.
2. It’s Basically A Safari On Water
African safaris are cool. And we offer plenty of those. But Alaska serves up its own unique wildlife experience.

Look out for sea otters swimming in a raft, bears lumbering along the shoreline, and so many whales! Think humpback, fin, minke, gray, and maybe even an iconic orca or ten…seriously. When our Director of Operations, Scott, previewed this cruise, he saw ten whales breaching at once.

And that’s on top of the moose, seals, mountain goats, and bounty of birds like bald eagles soaring above.

The nimble size of our ship also lets us change course effortlessly if we want to chase a pod of whales or other Alaskan attractions. Spontaneity and cruise ships rarely go hand-in-hand, but the National Geographic Sea Bird is a worthy exception.
3. The Naturalists Will Talk Nerdy to You
Every excursion will be led by an expert, entertainer, and human field guide in one. They’ll point out rare flora and fauna, make glacier science sound simple, explain the geography, and help level up your Insta-game with tips to snap the best pics.

With 4 naturalists and only 50 passengers aboard, everybody will have personalized access to their expertise.
4. You Can Follow Bear Trails
Feeling brave? Choose your own guided hiking adventure: easy, moderate, or full-on “I might be the first human ever to walk here” mode.

We’ll see fresh tracks, stunning landscapes, and maybe see a bear – from a respectful distance of course. And if that distance gets disrespected, we’ll be packing bear spray…because these aren’t the friendly bears of Provincetown!
5. There Are Glaciers!
Depending on Mother Nature’s mood and our Captain’s instinct, we’ll explore the massive glaciers of either Tracy Arm or LaConte Bay (both are gorgeous).

And we’ll get close. Tracy Arm is actually part of one massive glacier split between two fjords. It’s as mesmerizing as seeing the Grand Canyon, but from the opposite perspective.
6. You’ll Get Physical
To get closer to nature than even the Sea Bird allows (and get in a workout while you’re at it), you can kayak or stand-up paddleboard through secluded bays peppered with adorable baby bergs.

The water is calm, the views are unreal, and the freedom is glorious. Plus, there will always be a zodiac nearby for safety reasons.

Otherwise, it’s just you, your paddle, and the untamed wild.
7. Jet Boat Joyrides
While the cruise may be chill, there’s also a jet boat for some thrills. This baby zooms, hugging the coastline while admiring the landscape and those aforementioned animals.
It’s fast, fun, and will tickle your primordial brain.
8. It’s Almost All-Inclusive…And Way More Personalized
Nearly everything onboard is included in our trip price. Namely excursions, meals, and cocktails. The only booze options not included are super premium spirits. And the only meal you’ll pay for is lunch en route from Seattle to Ketchikan.

With a high crew-to-guest ratio, you’ll get to know the staff and fellow Out Adventurers well. No nameless crowds, mystery waiters, or buffet line chaos. Just friendly faces, great conversation, and a chance to make new friends.
9. Exquisite Dining Experiences
Here’s where small ships like the Sea Bird can really punch above their weight. Our lunches and dinners are both fully plated sit-down affairs that can accommodate dietary restrictions and preferences without compromise.

The menu changes daily and includes fresh seafood, juicy steaks, and decadent desserts. If you’ve cruised with us before, you also know that while the menu and service are of the highest caliber, you’re still free to wear shorts and flip-flops while onboard – the casual gay chic uniform!
10. The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show
If time allows before we board, we recommend taking in this wild, woodsy, over-the-top show. It’s half lumber sport, half musclebound chaos. You’ll laugh, you’ll cheer, and you’ll wonder if those flannel-clad fellers are single.

This show is undoubtedly the highlight of Ketchikan. There are up to six shows daily and tickets can usually be purchased at the gate. The only reason this show is not included in the trip price is in case of any flight delays en route.
11. No Passport? No Problem!
While Alaska is partly in the Arctic and 2,100 miles away from the other mainland United States, Americans won’t need a passport nor need to fret about crossing through customs. Just bring your government-issued REAL ID and a sense of adventure!
Ready to upgrade to something smaller?
Alaska by small ship is a *chef’s kiss* experience. Fewer crowds, more depth, and better stories. Whether we’re kayaking past icebergs, cruising with whales, or toasting glacier sunsets with a boatload of new friends, this is the kind of experience that stays with you long after the trip ends.
